Freelancer reviewThis Freelancer review is designed to show the various ways companies use the popular outsourcing site and help you decide if it’s the best place to find the freelance talent your company needs.

Is Freelancer Legit?

As you’ll see in the following sections, the question ‘Is Freelancer legit’ doesn’t really lend itself to simple answers. Just like Upwork and similar sites, Freelancer.com has its own list of pros and cons.  Our Freelancer Review might not provide you with any definitive answers, but it will tell you the various factors you’ll need to take into account when deciding on an outsourcing website.

One thing we know for sure is that Freelancer is a popular site for companies and remote workers around the country. If you only look at the number of users, the answer to ‘is Freelancer.com worth it?’ is a resounding yes. Here are a few things you need to know about how the general public perceives Freelancer’s services:

  • The site has close to 30 million registered users and is almost as well known as Upwork
  • These users have finished approximately 15 million projects using Freelancer’s talent pool
  • Software development, web design, and copywriting are among Freelancer’s most popular services, but you can use them for other important tasks as well.

All this sounds great at first glance, right? However, Freelancer has a significant downside as well. We’ll explore the specifics of these in just a bit. In the meantime, let’s have a look at how Freelancer functions.

Payment Structure

One way to approach the question ‘is Freelancer legit?’ is to examine its payment and posting structure. Freelancer clients post projects and bid on freelancers just like Upwork clients do. Both sites also require payment at the time of approval. Unlike Upwork, however, Freelancer also charges the employer and the freelancer a variable commission.

The amount of this commission depends on the type of membership both parties have. Though there are cheaper versions, a Freelancer.com membership can cost as much as $59.95 per month.

Then there’s the service fee that freelancers have to pay. This is determined by the type of project the freelancer has agreed to take on.  Here’s a summary of how the freelancer’s fees are calculated:

  • For fixed charge projects,  the freelance worker has to pay whatever figure is larger between a $5 flat fee and 10% of the total payment the freelancer receives.
  • Freelancer charges a flat 10% for projects that pay by the hour
  • The site charges 20% of the total fee for services that do not qualify as ‘projects’
  • Those enrolled in the ‘Preferred Freelancer Program’ pay a flat 15% fee for each project

Unfortunately, freelancers can only make 8 offers a month with a free account. If they want to make additional proposals, they have to upgrade to a paid account. Similar sites don’t impose this restriction.

The Conclusions of Our Freelancer Review

So the question remains: is Freelancer.com worth it? Regardless of how popular the site is, employers have several things to consider. In a sense, the decision whether to use a site like Freelancer comes down to how long you want to spend sifting through candidates for a particular job.

Will you get better results by finding an independent freelancer and paying them a bit more? How willing are you to sacrifice the time necessary to find talent on a site Freelancer? These are a couple of questions you’ll want to answer beforehand. You’ll also have to decide if you’re willing to pay the sometimes confusing service fees that sites like Freelancer charge.

Let’s face it– this is a tough decision. We’ll finish up our Freelancer review with a pair of contrasting conclusions. First, we can answer ‘yes’ to the question ‘Is Freelancer legit?’ It’s not like they’re trying to trick you buying services you don’t need or charging a huge amount of hidden fees. But there’s a caveat to these statements. Freelancer might very well be ‘legit,’ but we think you deserve a little bit better. Take your time finding a freelancer and be willing to pay them a little bit more You’ll be glad you did in the long run.
