Understanding the United States Federal Holiday Calendar

The United States of America Federal Government maintains a list of 10 Federal Holidays. Designated by the United States Congress, these Holidays have wide spread observance and therefore form the basis of the American Business Holiday Calendar.

These are frequently referred to as ‘work holidays’, ‘public holidays’, or even ‘legal holidays’ due to their prominent observance.

They are not, however, “National” holidays as some other countries might know it. Congress only has the authority to designate holidays for federal institutions constitutionally. Many States, however, will observe many of these Federal holidays.

Also, because Banks adhere to same holiday calendar as the federal reserve, banks observe the same Federal holidays listed below. Although, will typically observe Washington’s birthday as the more common President’s Day.

The Unique Exception: Inauguration Day

Most businesses will not have to worry about Inauguration Day, although it is technically an additional 11th Federal US Holiday.

Every 4 years after a presidential election there is Inauguration day on January 20th. Only employees of Washington DC and places in Maryland and Virginia neighboring Washington DC observe this holiday.

Functionally, it is intended to help ease the transitions following the swearing in of a new President or Vice President.
